The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that as of May 2010 the median annual earnings for sound engineering technicians was $54,030 with the top 10 percent in the field raking in more than $92,600. That some serious money !
The government projects that employment within audio engineering and related occupations is expected to increase by 17 percent between 2006 and 2016. This statistics identify a booming market so don’t miss out on the money train.

I’ve been looking around at the current options for me to get a job in a local recording studio. Something I’ve always wanted to do is learn he process of recording music. I think it would be cool to be a part of the creation process with a big band or artist on their newest project. I took a look around to see what was out there for getting technical training in the recording industry. Here’s what I found.

Full Sail is just your typical college specializing in technical training. You pay a lot of money to work towards a degree that a recording studio looking to hire you cares nothing about. Listen, I already went to college, it did nothing for me in regards to getting me work. I had to work my way up the ladder like everyone else and my college experience and degree meant nothing to employers. I don’t need to pay another $60K just to do it all over again.

Los Angeles Recording School is located in Hollywood, California. Although their website is super fancy, they are just another average college where you have to take general curriculum along with your audio engineering classes on-site. They claim you get to train in their “world class” recording studios, however, thousands of other students are also using these studios to train in. Also, these are just studios that the recording school built on their campus. This isn’t a real recording studio where you work with famous acts to record their albums. Moving on.

There’s some others out there, but it’s the same story, you have to pay for classes you don’t want to take to obtain a meaningless degree, you are learning in a classroom and not in the real world, the school does nothing to help you get work because they have no industry connections, etc. Then I found MAPPS.

MAPPS is a school that specializes in the technical and real world training of audio engineering and music producing. They offer online training along with intern experience inside a real recording studio that is currently working with big artists in the industry. There are no general curriculum classes that you’re forced to take and pay for. There’s no classroom you’re forced to attend. This automatically caught my interest because instead of going to a technical trade school to learn audio engineering and then having the task of finding work after graduation, I could attend MAPPS where I would be training in the actual recording studio I was hoping to obtain work at. This is genius and is exactly what I was looking for. Had I known about this type of program all this time, I’d be halfway done by now and might even be working in a studio today.

So, to wrap things up, if you’re interested in getting into a training program for audio engineering or music production, I recommend MAPPS. This is an excellent option to look closely at before making your decision on a school to attend and in my opinion, it’s the best option. MAPPS cuts out all the bull. They don’t charge a huge tuition that pays for classes you don’t want to take. It’s about getting you into the recording studio and training you while you’re there. This is the new form education is taking on, this is the future.

There are many different ways to achieve a proper dub step sound. Always remember there is no right or wrong way. Here is a quick video explaining one way of doing Complextro – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjbcMHcGh1w. Another way to do this without just throwing in random audio clips. Is when you have a written bass line in midi just just duplicate the track 15 times and change the patch on all the new tracks. Then you should bounce each track once you like the new patch to audio. Then once you have all the new bass lines bonces to audio you solo each track individually and find the high points in each new bass line. Cut out the parts that you don’t favor in each bass line then make sure that the original and main baseline fills in the gaps in between the new baselines where you cut out the unfavored parts so that the sound doesn’t drop out. Its a very similar technique to the one used in the video it just more for if you want a more specific melody played in your song vs just throwing in random clips. Personally I use a mixture of both. Hope this helps. If you have a cool track you want to share reply to this post to get feedback.

It’s a new age and there is a much easier, less expensive way to get your foot in the door. Don’t spend time in a classroom just to join the stampede of job seekers in 2-4 years once you‘ve obtained your degree. Instead, you could be training in a studio today, building experience, and working on actual sessions from small to famous acts.

Wouldn’t you rather learn in the studio this very day while building work experience? With today’s technology, it makes no sense to spend your money on a hefty college or university tuition price tag, money that could instead be used to buy top notch equipment to make your sound in demand while working freelance or money that could be used to fund the construction of your own recording studio.

MAPPS is designed to get you working upon completion of your training. Once you’ve completed The MAPPS on-site and online training program, you will have more than the necessary skills to work as an assistant engineer at any studio, as a freelance engineer all on your own, as a producer, mixer, sound designer, composer, or just make your own songs sound top notch. Furthermore, we will assist you in your job search. We wholeheartedly believe that with our training and assistance along with your determination and newfound knowledge, it would be nearly impossible for you not to find work. The guys doing the hiring are our affiliates so, where there is a job, we will do our very best to get you that job. We have the connections and job seeking resources you need.

Our fully guided program is no-nonsense. A traditional school isn’t going to do much to guide you. They provide a curriculum and some class instruction, but unfortunately, you’re one of hundreds, or possibly thousands of students that college professors teach daily. They may mean well, but it is nearly impossible for them to provide you with the necessary one on one attention and instruction you deserve for the tuition you’ve payed them. Furthermore, traditional college cannot provide you with a real studio experience where you are working on an album project for real groups and artists, engaging clientele, receiving hands-on instruction whenever needed, and guidance from a Client Relations Manager every step of the way. You will always get dedicated instruction with MAPPS. The spotlight will be on you and you’ll never be overlooked. This is a program designed for you and we will personally guide you to success.

Ask anyone you know working in the recording industry if time spent at a 2 or 4 year college makes sense. Ask them if they believe a degree is needed and if they if they are successful, if they feel they are where they are today because of their degree or college experience. We bet they’ll say none of the above mattered in getting them where they are in their engineering or music production career.

With MAPPS’s professional recording industry course you will learn by working side by side with an engineer or producer showing you the ropes in the recording industry in or near your place of residence. You will use the supplemental training videos in conjunction with the on-site training you will be receiving from a recording professional in the studio.

As a MAPPS student you will have access to an online school account. This is where you will receive your weekly lesson plans, instruction, take your exams, receive your grades and talk with other students via the online community.

As part of your curriculum, you will watch weekly video tutorials training you in Pro Tools, Ableton Live, etc. These videos show you how to use all the industry standard software by letting you watch, via screenshot, tutorials of the instructor using the software on his/her computer. This way of learning is not only fun, it’s easy for everyone.

The best way to make a career for yourself in the recording industry is to start training in a real recording studio today. Learning ProTools via video tutorial, applying what you’ve learned while using your own Pro Tools software, following MAPPS guided lesson plans online, taking the weekly exams, training in a real recording studio and networking while learning under an instructor will make you a well-rounded recording industry professional. Furthermore, we will help you find work in the recording industry where you can apply these mastered skills.
